Name Servers Tutorial

Below are instructions on how to create your own name server depending on which registrar you use. Make sure to use the instructions for your specific registrar.

CREATING NAME SERVERS THROUGH NETWORK SOLUTIONS:

Way 1:

  • Login to your Network Solutions account. Once logged in, you may want to locate the link named "Managed Host Servers" on the menu displayed on the left of your screen.
  • Upon clicking on that link, you will be prompted to enter the name server you would like to create. Make sure to enter your desired name server (such as ns.yourdomain.com") on the input box and click on "Continue".
  • When submitting the name server of your preference, you will be asked for the IP to which the new name server will resolve to. Enter one of the IPs that was provided to you on the Welcome Letter received when the server was placed online.
  • Once you click on continue, you will be displayed with a summary of your new name server. Review them making sure they are created with the correct spelling and to the correct IP address. (If not, they would be resolving a completely different address). Confirm the changes by clicking on "Apply" in order for this registration to be updated on Netsol's database.
  • That's it! :) Now, once your request has been confirmed, it will take around 24 - 72 hours for your new servers to be registered on the Internet.
Way 2:

  • Login to your Network Solutions account. Once logged in, click on "View Domain Name List" from the menu found on the left-side of your screen. You will see your domain name listed under "Domain Names List". Click on the domain that you wish to use for creating the name servers to open the domain details window. Under domain information you will see the names servers to where your domain currently points to.
  • Either click on "Edit DNS" from beside the listed name servers or on the domain name listed.
  • If you click on "Edit DNS", NS will prompt you to whether you would like to change to their name servers and take advantage of several services. Click on "Continue" to proceed with changing the domain's name servers to your new ones.
  • On the "Specify Nameservers" page, you will be listed the current name servers set to your domain name. Enter your new name servers, such as ns.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com on the provided form and click on "Continue".
  • NS should now prompt you to provide the IP for the new nameserver you have created. Enter it on the provided box and click on "Continue".
  • At this point, you should see the confirmation screen for the DNS changes made to the domain. Review that you have typed everything properly and click on "Save DNS" to complete your request.
CREATING NAME SERVERS IN OPENSRS / TUCOWS:

  • Login to your Tucows / Opensrs account via https://manage.opensrs.net/ Once logged in, locate the option "Name Servers" on the menu displayed on the top of the page. Click on that option.
  • On the Manage Name Servers section, and at the bottom of the page, you will see a link: "If you want to create or modify a name server which is based on {your domain} click here."
  • At this point, you should see the page "Manage Nameservers Hosts" section. Browse down to "Create Name Server" to register a nameserver based on your domain name. All nameservers must have a unique IP (which was provided to you upon signup for service).
  • Type the prefix for your nameserver (dns, ns, ect) and its IP address and click on "Create Name Server". Note: A recommended prefix would be "ns", "dns" or similar terms. Do no use "www" as it may cause problems when your web server is looked up. The IP used should be the one assigned to you on your Welcome Letter.
  • Once you have generated your new nameservers, click on "Name Servers" on the top menu and type them in under "Adding New Name Servers" section. Once you click on "Add Name Servers", they will be listed under the "Manage Name Servers" section and in most cases, they will list the IP to which you had registered them to on the side.
  • Make sure to remove any old nameserver that you might have set previously in order to have the domain resolve only to your new nameservers. Check those nameservers and then click on "Save Configuration".
  • In about 48 - 72 hours, your domain should now respond to the new nameservers you have created.
CREATING NAME SERVERS IN REGISTER.COM:

  • Login to Register.com by clicking on "My Account" or going to http://mydomain.register.com. Once you have logged in to the "Domain Manager", on the left side menu, you should see a list of the domains you have registered with Register.com. Select the one that you will be using for your new name servers.
  • Once the page has updated to reflect the settings of the chosen domain, click on "Domain Name Servers (DNS) under the "Account Management" section.
  • On the "Change Your DNS" window, browse down to "Add or Change Your Domain Name Servers". Enter your preferred name servers (such as dns.yourdomain.com, ect) and click on "Submit".
  • The new window should now ask for the IP(s) for the new name servers that you have created. Indicate the IP(s) that have been assigned for your usage on the input box(es) displayed and click on "Confirm".
  • Register.com will once again display the confirmation request for the DNS changes. Confirm and the final window should display more information on how to finalize your DNS changes.
